Look Inside The Cover, Annotated

Every detail on this cover
is a clue.

01 ✦ The Flame

The pink is not a decoration.

Every necromancer before her worked in sickly green and bone-white. Elara's magic burns neon-pink — the color of peonies, defiance, and seventeen arrest warrants.

02 ✦ The Thread

The thread between them is real.

A soul-tether: fifty feet apart, or death. It was designed as a punishment. It doesn't stay one.

03 ✦ The Armor

The armor is a cage.

The sun-sigil plate of the "Golden Lion," the Order's living masterpiece. Kaelen polishes it every morning. He also hates it more than anything in the realm.

04 ✦ The Ghosts

The dead are watching.

In Oakhaven, ghosts keep their memories, their manners, and — regrettably — their opinions.

05 ✦ The Cathedral

Something rots beneath the city.

The High Cathedral glows gold above Oakhaven. Beneath it, the Catacombs have been sealed for three hundred years. Ask why.

The silver spade bit into the soil with a satisfying thud.

Elara Vance didn't mind the manual labor; it was good for the glutes, and the dead were generally better conversationalists than the living. At least the dead didn't complain about the price of eggs or the scandalous length of her hemlines.

"Honestly, Arthur," Elara said, wiping a smudge of dirt from her nose with a lace-trimmed sleeve that had seen far better nights. "If you didn't want to tell me where the family jewels were buried, you should have written a clearer will."

"Necromancy is a foul art! My bones deserve the sanctity of the earth!"

"It's recycling, Arthur. Get over yourself."

She raised her hands, flexing her fingers in the moonlight. The air around her fingernails began to glow with a soft, neon-pink necrosis — her signature color. Most necromancers dealt in sickly greens or bone-whites. But Elara's magic had always been… vibrant. The color of a sunset that had stayed up too late and had a few drinks. The color of peonies and passion and defiance.

It was the color that had gotten her arrested seventeen times in the past three years.

She was about to make it eighteen.

"Elara Vance," a voice boomed — deep, resonant, and unfortunately very attractive in that "forbidden paladin" sort of way. "By the authority of the High Order, you are under arrest for Unauthorized Spectral Reanimation."

Elara didn't even look up. She would recognize that voice anywhere…

The Necromancer

Elara Vance

Oakhaven's only active necromancer. Sarcastic, lace-sleeved, and neon-pink down to her magic — a color the High Order calls heresy and she calls a personal brand. Arrested seventeen times by the same insufferable paladin. About to make it eighteen.

"It's recycling, Arthur. Get over yourself."

The Golden Knight

Sir Kaelen

The Golden Lion of the Paladin Order. Polishes his breastplate, his moral compass, and his insufferable sense of duty — in that order. Has arrested the same necromancer seventeen times, and has started to wonder why he keeps volunteering.

"I'd rather be damned with you than saved by them."

The Author No Face. No Pronouns. No Apologies.

Who is Alix Alora?

Nobody knows. That's the point.

Alix Alora writes from a fog-wrapped corner of the Pacific Northwest, where the tea is strong enough to wake the dead and the antique key collection has gotten "slightly out of hand." Beyond that, the record goes quiet — deliberately.

No author photo. No pronouns. No tell-all bio. Just a simple belief, printed on the first page and kept ever since: magic has a cost, love is the most dangerous weapon, and a good mystery should stay mysterious.

Guess all you like. Alix is listening.

  • Location — Pacific Northwest (approximately)
  • Collects — antique keys, unquiet spirits
  • Drinks — tea, brewed to necromantic strength
  • Identity — the eighteenth mystery
